BMW E21 323i Rear Brake Backing Plates: Left and Right Pair

We supply new aftermarket rear brake backing plates for the BMW E21 323i with rear disc brakes. You recieve a set. One left plate and one right plate. The price covers the pair and they are not sold seperately.

Also called splash plates, dust shields or protection plates these replace the original plates behind the rear brake discs.

Fitment and BMW references

Position BMW OE reference Quantity supplied
Rear left 34211119791 1
Rear right 34211150298 / earlier reference 34211119792 1

For the BMW E21 323i rear disc brake assembly. These are not the rear drum brake backing plates used on other E21 models. If your car has been converted to rear discs then check the fitted assembly and plate references before ordering.

Rust affects the handbrake mounting points too

The original plates can rust through after decades of exposure to water and road dirt. Thin edges may crack or bend towards the disc and cause a scraping noise. Inspect the plate itself before asuming the noise comes from the pads or wheel bearing.

On the E21 323i the backing plate also supports the drum-style handbrake inside the rear disc. The handbrake shoe retaining pins locate through slots in the plate. Corrosion around these slots can leave the shoes insecure even when the shoes and springs are in good condition.

Replacing handbrake shoes and fitting new retaining hardware does not repair missing metal in the backing plate. Check the mounting slots with the rear disc removed before ordering only the handsbrake service parts.

Inspect the plates during rear brake work

  • Rear disc replacement or a complete rear brake rebuild.
  • Handbrake shoe, spring or retaining pin replacement.
  • Investigation of scraping or intermittent contact with the disc.
  • Inspection of rust holes, loose edges and damaged shoe retaining slots.

A plate that looks reasonable around its outer edge may still be corroded at the handbrake mounting points. Inspect both areas and check both sides of the car.

Replacement plates for an E21 restoration

Original BMW plate are difficult to source new. Parts catalogues mark the left plate as discontinued and suppliers list the right plate as no longer available. This aftermarket pair provides replacement plates without relying on the condition of used originals.

During fitting inspect the handbrake shoes and hardware. Check that the retaining pins seat securely and that the plates clear the discs. Follow the BMW repair procedure for installation and handbrake adjustment.
